An Indian actor who is widely considered one of the greatest of his generation and a pioneer of method acting in India. During the 1950s, he starred in some of the most successful films of the decade, including Devdas (1955), Madhumati (1958) and Mughal-e-Asam (1960). He retired in 1998, having made 60-plus films and earning nine of the Indian film industry’s prestigious Filmfare Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.
