A make-up artist whose career began in the 1940s, Smith was a pioneer in prosthetics known for his transformation of famous faces and as a mentor to Rick Baker. He was a BAFTA and Oscar winner for Amadeus (1984), and his credits also include The Godfather (1972), The Exorcist (1973), Taxi Driver (1976) and The Hunger (1983).
