A British actor and screenwriter, Welland was equally accomplished in both his chosen fields and won BAFTAs for his writing on Armchair Theatre (1970) and his supporting performance in Ken Loach’s Kes (1969). He received further screenplay nominations for Yanks (1979) and Chariots of Fire (1981), the latter also winning him an Oscar.
