A Belgian director, writer and actress who was a key figure in modern feminist cinema, her first narrative feature Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1980 Brussels (1975) was widely regarded as a subversive masterpiece. Her key works included Hotel Monterey (1972), A Couch in New York (1996) and The Captive (2000).
