A beloved and versatile British actor, Hoskins portrayed a range of characters from the gentle to the extremely violent with equal subtlety. He received BAFTA nominations for his performances in Pennies From Heaven (1978), The Long Good Friday (1980) and The Honorary Consul (1983), and won the Best Actor BAFTA for Mona Lisa (1986), for which he was also Oscar-nominated.
