A New Zealand film executive spotted by Lew Grade after successfully distributing The Muppet Movie down under, Gavin moved to London where he moved into pre-sales. He arranged financing for films including The Killing Fields (1984) and Sid and Nancy (1986) before returning home to produce features, and he notably helped finance and develop Whale Rider (2002).
