A French writer-director whose best known films internationally are Coup de Torchon (1981), Round Midnight (1986) and A Sunday in the Country (1984). He was nominated for a BAFTA for the latter, eventually claiming a win for 1989’s Life and Nothing But, shared with producer René Cleitman. Having started out as a film critic, his documentary My Journey Through French Cinema (2016) and subsequent 2017 series are a must-watch for cineastes.
