Bamber Gascoigne CBE

A British presenter and writer, who was best known for his role as the original host and quizmaster of University Challenge, a seat he held for 25 years following its debut in 1962. Gascoigne was given the role after acting as theatre critic of the Spectator and Observer. He also researched, wrote and presented various television documentaries, including The Christians (1977), Victorian Values (1987) and The Great Moghuls (1990), many of which were either preceded by or accompanied by books. He was appointed a CBE in 2018.
