Alderney’s breakthrough project is the animated children’s series Maddie + Triggs.
‘Care’ is the watchword of producer and head of production Alderney Middleton. This is clear in her breakthrough project, the cheerful animated children’s series Maddie + Triggs (2024), following the adventures of a seven-year-old girl, who has a vision impairment, and her trusty hound. But, care also plays a vital role in the working environment Alderney fosters, taking a ‘people first’ approach that puts welfare, training, and fair working conditions above all else.
Perhaps this responsibility for the wellbeing of others comes from Alderney’s childhood, where she was one of eight children. Having such a big family certainly helped her develop exceptional organisational skills, a must for any producer. One of her first industry roles as a PA also allowed her an opportunity to experience all aspects of the production process and see the impact each individual has on the final product.
Alderney is currently overseeing animation for Horrible Science – Season Two and producing Duck and Frog, a new children’s animation IP for the BBC’s Ignite scheme.
In their own words…
“We’re at a stage now where the processes we have in the studio are working, in terms of putting people’s wellbeing first and thinking about their different impacts. What I’d like to do now is find other people, including mentors, who can help me build out a ‘people first’ production toolkit to consider how we onboard people, how we upscale, introduce new talent, what limitations need to be considered… I want to refocus people to strive to be better, care about each other more. I’d like to find likeminded folks to join me in challenging the industry on this.”
