Celebrating 50 years of Production Design

Posted: 17 Feb 2026

Bringing a whole world to life on screen is no mean feat. Something a film’s Production Design team, who create the visual environments that draw us into a character’s world, know all too well. So, as we prepare to give out the 50th award in this category at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards we wanted to stop to celebrate it in all its glory…

From Bugsy Malone to Wicked

The first time the BAFTA for Production Design was awarded was 1977 and it went to Bugsy Malone. A musical comedy starring an all-child cast, including a 13-year-old Jodie Foster, Bugsy Malone saw a vision of a New York prohibition bar brought to fruition on the big screen.

More recently, 2025’s BAFTA for Production Design was awarded to Wicked. Another musical, but this time in a fantasy vein, Wicked saw a beloved stage set reimagined for cinemagoers.

With dystopian landscapes and 1920s opulence in between

Over the years that we’ve been giving out the BAFTA for Production Design winners have brought us everything from eerie dystopias and decadent eras from history to a wide range of unique visions of other worlds. For example, the likes of Blade Runner, Children of Men, Dune and Brazil gave glimpses of societies we can only hope do not come to fruition. While the glamourous sets of films like Babylon and  The Great Gatsby invited us to dream of a time of decadence that is long since past.
