BAFTA Crew 2013

2013 was the launch year of BAFTA Crew, a scheme designed to provide industry professionals with a unique networking and career development opportunity.

BAFTA Crew is a professional network that gives you access to the best established film industry talent and a network of fellow professionals. The scheme was launched in 2013 in association with Skillset Craft and Technical Skills Academy and Creative England.

Over the course of the year, we were able to provide a full and unique networking and skills development programme for 200 'below the line' film and TV professionals. To find out more about the launch of the scheme, read the announcement press release >

Simon Hayes

Simon Hayes (Sound Mixer): Online Video Q&A

Monday 25 March at 7.30pm

BAFTA- and Oscar-winning production sound mixer Simon Hayes (Les Misérables, Prometheus, Mamma Mia!) will deliver the first BAFTA Crew online Q&A, streamed live from BAFTA HQ. We'll be with Simon in London, feeding him questions from BAFTA Crew members that you can submit at any point before or during the stream.

Laurily Adams (Sara Putt Associates): Online CV Workshop

Wednesday 3 April at 7.30pm

Laurily Adams from below-the-line crew talent agent Sara Putt Associates will be joining us for an online CV workshop. Laurily will be answering your questions about representing yourself, approaching employers and agents, interviews, cover letters and the all-important CV.

A masterclass with BAFTA-winning Les Misérables production designer Eve Stewart.She will host a special event talking through the process of designing for films including The Kings Speech, The Damned United and Topsy Turvy.

BAFTA presents a craft masterclass with acclaimed BAFTA-nominated Director of Photography Sean Bobbitt (Shame, Hunger, The Place Beyond The Pines, Byzantium). In his BAFTA Crew masterclass, Sean will discuss his creative process and career in the camera department, exploring his work on award-winning collaborations with directors across genres and mediums.

Masterclass with Anita Overland on Production Management

FACT, Liverpool

BAFTA presents a masterclass with BAFTA-winning producer and co-producer, Anita Overland (The Iron Lady, Red Riding, In This World). Anita will discuss her craft and varied career in production management, both above and below the line, working across a huge variety of budgets, locations and genres.

One of Britain’s top camera operators and BAFTA Crew jury member Peter Cavaciuti (Skyfall, Thor, Captain America, Dark Shadows) will be joining the BAFTA Crew programme fresh from his work on Muppets…Again with a special online livestreamed Q&A live from BAFTA HQ, we’ll be taking questions from BAFTA Crew members, which you can submit at any point before or during the stream, talking about Peter’s career, his work on Roger Deakins BAFTA-nominated camera team on Skyfall, his craft and life on set.

BAFTA presents a masterclass with BAFTA-winning editor Chris King (Senna, Exit Through The Gift Shop, Marley, Our War), in conversation with journalist Ian Haydn Smith. In his BAFTA Crew masterclass, Chris will offer insights into his craft and his take on storytelling - as well as sharing dispatches from some of the most exciting cutting rooms in the country, working with acclaimed directors Asif Kapadia, Kevin Macdonald, Shane Meadows and elusive artist Banksy.

In his BAFTA Crew masterclass at Broadway Cinema, Ryan will talk about his work packaging, filming and delivering projects across a variety of budgets, formats and genres, in the process creating some of the most exciting low and mid budget British films of the last 10 years.

Lois Burwell's career in make-up has spanned more than 3 decades, during which time she has earned an Oscar nomination and 3 BAFTA nods and worked on films such as Lincoln, War Horse and Saving Private Ryan. For this online event, we'll be with Lois Burwell at BAFTA HQ, streaming her interview video live to BAFTA Crew members.

In his BAFTA Crew masterclass at Aesthetica Short Film Festival, in conversation with his colleague, Oscar-winning producer Mia Bays, Sundström will discuss the craft of post-production sound, how he works with directors and editors throughout the post-production process, across a huge variety of projects and budgets.

Thursday 14 November at 8.00pm

Join us for our online live stream Q&A with editor Mark Day. This is a great opportunity to hear from a two time BAFTA winner and Emmy nominated editor, whose work spans 27 years across 43 film and television projects. Mark’s credits include the last four Harry Potter features, Richard Curtis’ About Time, and Paul Greengrass’ The Theory of Flight.

Taking place at the Leeds International Film Festival, cinematographer Ben Davis joins the BAFTA Crew programme to discuss technical and creative techniques behind his hugely successful catalogue of films including Layer Cake, Hannibal Rising, Kick Ass, Seven Psychopaths and the critically acclaimed drama, Masters of Sex.

Masterclass with Morag Ross on Hair & Make-Up Design

Saturday 23 November at 4.30pm
The Yard Theatre, Hackney Wick

In her BAFTA Masterclass at Underwire Film Festival, Ross will discuss her craft and process as a make-up designer and her award-winning collaborations with not only directors, actors, but across the departments. Credits include Hugo, The Aviator and Orlando for which she won a BAFTA.

The Duchess

Michael Carlin (Production Designer): Online Video Q&A

Wednesday 27 November at 8.00pm

We're pleased to announce that production designer Michael Carlin (The Duchess, The Last King Of Scotland, The Reluctant Fundamentalist) will be delivering the final BAFTA Crew online video Q&A in 2013. Michael is now one of the feature film world's most in-demand production designers, whose work on The Duchess (2008) earned him an Oscar nomination for Art Direction.

BAFTA Crew Participants in 2013

There were 200 BAFTA Crew participants in 2013, hailing from over 30 English counties, including Northumberland in the north, Cornwall in the south and Norfolk in the east. A wide range of craft areas were also represented; including production design, camera, costume, editing, hair and make-up, production management, sound and visual effects.
