A Japanese filmmaker whose work displayed a strong social conscience, Kumai also excelled at epic period tales. This Swarming Earth (1970), The Long Darkness (1972), Sandakan 8 (1974) are among his best known films, with later examples including Death of a Tea Master (1989) and Darkness in the Light (2001).
