John Motson OBE

A British sports commentator, who was known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of football. John Motson started out as a print journalist on the Barnet Press (1963-1967) and Sheffield Morning Telegraph (1967-1968), before moving to BBC Radio 2 in 1968. He initially just wrote scripts but was soon live commentating, with his first game Everton vs Derby County in 1969. He then joined Match of the Day (1971-2018), where he became the voice of football, both live commentating and recording highlights for the next 50 years, with his first game Liverpool vs Chelsea. His long career included more than 2,500 televised games, nine World Cups (1974-2006) and 29 FA Cup finals (1977-2007). He was presented with a BAFTA Special Award in 2018, after being made OBE in 2001.
