Although he began his career writing novels and later tried his luck writing for Hollywood, Dortort quickly recognised the value of the emerging medium of television. His most enduring creation was the long running western series Bonanza (1959-1973), but he subsequently enjoyed further success in producing The High Chaparral (1967-71).
