Sarema Shorr

Born in London and raised in Scotland, Sarema underwent classical training in music and theatre throughout her adolescence. At the University of Edinburgh, she wished to understand with a degree of granularity and objectivity, the most complex thing she could, life. Studying biology at its most macroscopic level fundamentally altered Sarema's perception of reality. Through science, she found herself increasingly drawn to what was diametrically opposed in perspective but aligned in directionality, film.

To be intrigued and moved by the world as a scientist and filmmaker alike requires a kindred sensitivity and curiosity. Sarema is invigorated by the artforms in which film entangles. By engaging with us in multitudes, cinema presents us with two seeming opposites; a directness in representation and an allowance for immense complexity. The cinema Sarema is drawn to contains a wealth of nuances, addressing the audience’s ideological, existential, emotional, and sensorial selves.
