BAFTA Annual Games Lecture 2012: Hideo Kojima

Acclaimed video game director Hideo Kojima will deliver this year’s BAFTA Annual Games Lecture sponsored by Autodesk on Friday 28 September. The Japanese creator of the hugely successful METAL GEAR series will be sharing his views on the creative landscape in games.

BAFTA’s Annual Lectures showcase renowned creative talent in film, television and games, providing a platform on which individuals share their personal vision for the future of their industry. Previous speakers at the Annual Games Lecture include Will Wright, Peter Molyneux, and co-founders of Bioware Drs Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk.

Kojima has received numerous accolades over the years, and is widely recognised as one of the games industry’s most influential and innovative game directors and writers. He has been heavily influenced by film throughout his career, and is known for spectacular cinematic games featuring a stunning cast of characters.

Hideo Kojima began his career in 1986 when he joined video game publisher KONAMI as a designer and planner. He later created METAL GEAR, an early example of a stealth action game which has since spawned a series of sequels for each generation of hardware that together have sold over 30 million copies worldwide. METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Guns of the Patriots was nominated for Artistic Achievement and Original Score at the GAME British Academy Video Games Awards in 2009 .

Kojima is currently celebrating 25 years of the METAL GEAR series, and has also been director, producer, writer and/or game designer on celebrated titles such as Snatcher, Zone of the Enders, and Boktai. He is currently Director of Kojima Productions and Vice President of Konami Digital Entertainment.

The BAFTA Annual Games Lecture takes place on Friday 28 September at BAFTA’s headquarters in London. The lecture will start at 7pm, preceded by a Champagne Taittinger reception from 6.30pm. Public tickets for the lecture are available from the BAFTA website here . A recording will be available after the event on the BAFTA Guru website ( www.bafta.org/guru ).
