A successful businessman, Tennant joined the board of Caledonian Associated Cinemas after the war, as a non-executive director. As Grampian Television, the company won the franchise for Independent Television in the north east and Highlands of Scotland in 1961. Appointed chairman in 1968, he held the role for 21 years.
