EE British Academy Film Awards in 2014 - Winners Acceptance Speech: Production Design

16 February 2014
NOMINATIONS for EE BRITISH ACADEMY FILM AWARDS in 2013

Acceptance speech by Catherine Martin, winner of the Production Design category for The Great Gatsby at the EE Britsh Academy Film Awards in 2014.

CATHERINE MARTIN:  I would like to thank the kettle.  This is a very long list of thank yous and also as I advance in age I can't read without my reading glasses, so this might take an enormous amount of time.  Thank you.

Oh my God, it is a miracle!  I would like to thank BAFTA for honouring us with this award.  Film is a profoundly collaborative art form and obviously we were only here because we stand on the shoulders of an extraordinary team that numbered some 300 on the The Great Gatsby.  Of course, we had fantastic partners in Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow who supported us all the way, a fantastic supervising art director, Ian Gracie.  My associate production designer Karen Murphy, the wonderful Bev Dunn, my set director.

But most importantly the person that I think we need to thank last, but certainly not least, we are all owe him in our team an enormous debt of gratitude, and that is to my husband Baz Luhrmann.  A man who always follows his heart.  He passionately makes films that divide critics, thrill audiences and takes cinema to new places.  This award really belongs to him, a maverick who affords us the opportunity of truly doing our best work.  Thank you.
