A British journalist and television presenter, who was among the first women to host Top Gear, which was a much more serious, fact-based reviews programme than its current counterpart. Having established a career as a print journalist covering both motoring affairs and motor racing, Baker joined Top Gear in 1980 and appeared in more than 100 episodes of the show over an 11-year period, as well as spots on the BBC’s Breakfast programme. She also worked as the Observer’s motoring correspondent for 13 years, and became the first female chair of the Guild of Motoring Writers in 1978.
