As head of production at United Artists, Bach had the dubious distinction of inviting Michael Cimino to direct Heaven’s Gate (1980), a box office disaster which the executive perceptively recounted five years later in his book (and 2004 documentary) Final Cut: Dreams and Disaster in the Making of Heaven’s Gate.
