Nichelle Nichols

An American actress, who will be remembered for her trailblazing role as Lt Uhura in the Star Trek franchise. Nichols had made a few appearances on US television before she joined the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969) at the start of its run, portraying the character in 69 episodes of the show and six of its films (1979-1991), plus voicing the character in The Animated Series (1973-1974). Notably, she was the first Black actress to share an interracial lip-to-lip kiss on television in the episode ‘Plato’s Stepchildren’ (1968). More recent roles included Heroes (2007) and The Young and the Reckless (2016).
