A British actress, who will be forever remembered as the chain-smoking launderette manager Dot Cotton in EastEnders, a role she first played in 1985 and retired in 2020 after appearing in more than 2,350 episodes of the soap. The role won her many awards and nominations, including a BAFTA nomination in 2009. She first appeared on British screens in the 1950s, going on to appear in various series over the following decades, including Dixon of Dock Green (1965-1969), Coronation Street (1970-1971), Doctor Who (1973-1974), The Duchess of Duke Street (1976-1977), Now and Then (1983-1984) and Gormenghast (2000). She was presented with an MBE in 2008 and then an OBE in 2022.
