An American actress who was one of the icons of Hollywood’s golden age, De Havilland helped bring the old studio system to an end when she successfully sued Warner Bros to be released from her contract. She received Oscar nominations for Gone With the Wind (1939), Hold Back the Dawn (1941) and The Snake Pit (1948), winning for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949).
