An acclaimed novelist whose work often evoked the economic privations of her Liverpool childhood, Bainbridge was an actress in her youth and this world was reflected in her novel An Awfully Big Adventure, filmed in 1995. Other works translated to the screen include Sweet William (1980) and The Dressmaker (1988).
