Miriam Velazquez | The John F. Grist Documentary Scholarship

Miriam was born in a small city in West Mexico. Since she was young, Miriam has enjoyed the process of learning by problem-solving. During her Bachelor's Degree studies, Miriam started cultivating her skills in film editing, sound design, and visual effects. At the end of the program, Miriam co-directed and edited the film Ma-Mikampa. This project made her realize the importance of connecting with the characters of a documentary by creating a space for mutual trust and personal discovery.

The moment I knew that I'd be counting on the support of a world-leading organization like BAFTA represented a turning point in my professional and personal life. The BAFTA US Scholarship strengthens my belief in the power of cinema and storytelling to unite people and enrich our lives. I'm pleased to be part of this great community and gather experiences I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Recently, Miriam left the comfort of Mexico to extend her skills and expand her horizons. As a graduate student at Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, she is exploring the art of Film Editing and learning the importance of creating a structure made of images and sounds to potentialize the ability to direct the feelings of an audience.
