Joseph Field Eccles | BAFTA Scholarship

Joseph Field Eccles, 24, from Epsom, is awarded a BAFTA Scholarship of £10,000 to support his MA in Sound Design for Film and Television at the National Film and Television School. Joe graduated from Ravensbourne University London in 2021, and it was while studying here, that he would first be formally introduced to the art of sound design and be given the opportunity to put his creative ideas into practice. Gaining in-depth knowledge about its historical context, its wider often-undervalued application across multimedia, and the holistic approach that has become fundamental in creating immersive soundtracks for discerning audiences.

I cannot thank BAFTA enough for awarding me this scholarship. It is truly an honour to have the support and validation of such a prestigious organisation. In addition to the financial pressure that has been alleviated, for which I am extremely grateful, the value of receiving the support of a mentor with in-depth knowledge and experience of the industry, at this stage in my development as a sound designer, cannot be understated.

Alongside his studies, Joe has always been eager to learn more about the different facets of the industry and gain as much hands-on experience as possible. As well as interning at leading British production company Fulwell 73, he has worked as a sound assistant on a variety of large-venue, live music performances and on-set/studio promotional pieces for Sony Music and Samsung. Joe is excited by the once in a lifetime opportunity to attend the NFTS. He knows that through studying at this internationally esteemed institution, he will be regularly collaborating with other like-minded passionate individuals, utilising industry standard facilities and receiving the support of a network of world-class contributors.

He hopes to further develop his evolving creative voice as a sound designer; through working on impactful projects that both spark conversation and truly showcase the power sound has within the storytelling process.
