Sumit Purohit | Director/Writer

Sumit Purohit, native to the state nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas – Uttarakhand, India – dons many hats including that of a filmmaker, writer, editor, and visual artist. His love affair with filmmaking began from watching the varied and colourful mainstream Hindi films which drew the child who loved illustration and dreamed of being an animator to the world of moviemaking. It didn’t take long before Sumit discovered his passion lay in building visual narratives.

An alumnus of the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University, Baroda, Sumit spent his college days dabbling in theatre while also shooting short films and videos with his trusted handy cam. A film appreciation course at the Film and Television Institute of India gave him his first insight into the fascinating world of alternative, experimental and art house cinema and is a huge influence on his work, to this day.

Sumit's directorial debut was with an experimental short documentary was I Woke Up One Morning & Found Myself Famous, which was widely screened in film festivals across the country. It dealt with voyeurism and news media and was set in a narrative style that blurred lines between fiction and non-fiction.

As a self-taught editor, Sumit also dabbled as a trailer/promo editor, working on various award-winning films.  He has a keen interest in exploring latest innovations in filmmaking technology and is eager to integrate it in his process.

Most recently, Sumit received widespread acclaim for writing and editing Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, a 10-part series based on the book by journalists Sucheta Dalal and Debashis Basu. Set in the Bombay of the 1980's-90's, it takes you behind the scenes of India's biggest financial scam at that time.

In addition, he was the co-writer on the Hindi Film Bangistan, a black comedy, and Amazon Prime Video’s International Emmy nominated Indian original series Inside Edge.

Sumit’s debut feature documentary titled Charlie Champion- an ode to the magic of cinema and its influence beyond borders and generations - is in the post-production stage.
