Rosy McEwen | Performer

(She/Her)

It took a long time for Rosy McEwen to accept that all she really wanted to be was an actor. As a child, Rosy loved performing in her school productions and even attended a casting call for the part of Briony in Atonement aged 13, making it down to the last two. But then teenage life took over, and Rosy started putting her desired career off, heading to university to study something entirely different. By her third year, she realised it was time to give it a go and consequently enrolled in Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Rosy started out in theatre, including with the RSC, before landing onscreen roles in projects such as the second season of The Alienist (2020) and the mini-series Close to Me (2021). Following this, fellow Breakthrough Georgia Oakley picked her to play the lead in Blue Jean (2022), where she delivered a truly engrossing and nuanced performance as a teacher struggling with her identity. The film earned Rosy a BIFA win and two further nominations, as well as a place on ScreenDaily’s Stars of Tomorrow 2022 list.

In their own words...

“I look up to people who make good choices and pick good characters based on what they’re passionate about... I’m really keen to constantly challenge the way people see me, to not fit in any kind of box... I strive for that, because that’s what excites me. “

“The industry connections [of BAFTA Breakthrough] are very exciting, because this job and your life can change so quickly. I found I had all these questions but I didn’t know where to direct them. When I met any wonderful more experienced actors on set, I wanted to pick their brains but you’re also there to do a job... So, it will just be nice to have someone who’s ahead of you say, ‘don’t worry about this’, ‘maybe think about this’.”

Rosy has just finished playing Desdemona in Othello on stage, with her next film role in Rabbit Trap, produced by Bankside Films.
