Morag Taylor | Principal Technical Artist

As the fourth child of eight, it’s amazing that Morag Taylor had any opportunity to play games as a youth. Even so, such games as Zelda, Day of the Tentacle and the Monkey Island series have stuck in her memory as favourites and perhaps influenced her decision to work in the games industry when a career in film visual effects beckoned. Morag won an intern spot at Creative Assembly and would stay at the company for the next seven years, earning promotions and working across such triple-A games as Total War: Attila (2015), Total War: Warhammer (2016), Total War: Warhammer II (2017) and Total War: Warhammer III (2022). She decided to move on from Creative Assembly earlier in 2022 to pursue other adventures in games.

In their own words:

“Technical artist is halfway between art and code. I’ve always loved maths and art, but there never seemed to be a career that melded those two things together. When I was thinking about university, I saw a making of video about animation, where someone said it was a nice mesh between maths and art. So, I went and did an animation course and I thought I would go into film VFX. A well-timed LinkedIn message from the art director on Total War suggested I consider a career in games and encouraged me to apply for their VFX trainee role. Even though I played games, for some reason I was so geared towards film that games hadn’t crossed my mind as a viable career option...

“My old lead recommended I apply [for BAFTA Breakthrough]. Warhammer III was just about to come out and so I thought it would be a good idea to apply... The year of mentorship felt like it was coming at just the right time, because I left Creative Assembly just after Warhammer III released. I’m still trying to figure out where I want to go from here...

“The main thing for me is to reach out and talk to people and learn from their experiences. No one can tell you the right thing to do, but their learnings can apply to you if you feel like you’re in a similar position. Like a lot of game devs, I think the ultimate dream is to make my own game.”

Morag’s Breakthrough credit is the game Total War: Warhammer 3
