Ember Lab | Games

Brothers Mike and Josh Grier have been playing video games their whole lives. The brothers grew up in Orlando, Florida, where their father worked for Disney Parks. The two started Ember Lab in 2009 as an independent studio that specialized in digital character development and animation for film and commercials. Hunter Schmidt joined Mike and Josh as an intern, but today serves as their Animation Director, having worked with the brothers to establish a distinctive style for the studio.

In 'Kena: Bridge of Spirits' players take on the titular role of Kena - a young spirit guide on a quest to uncover the mysterious story surrounding the demise of her village. The lush tropical environment the game navigates stands out for its attention to detail and responsible cultural representation. The game is available on the Sony PlayStation platform and has already received critical acclaim and has garnered nominations for Best Indie Game and Best Art Direction at the 2021 Game Awards.

As a BAFTA Breakthrough, the Ember Lab team looks forward to the mentorship program to sharpen their skills as creative storytellers in the gaming space and get guidance to avoid some of the pitfalls they discovered the hard way during the development and release of Kena.
