Daphne Wu | Cinematographer

I think as I get older, I'm more and more appreciative of these opportunities and oftentimes, it's taking this opportunity and see what you could do with it. My immediate thought was, great I'm going to make a whole new group of friends for sure and hopefully we can be creative collaborators in the future.

Daphne Wu is a Chinese American cinematographer based in Los Angeles. Born in Hebei, China, she grew up in Singapore and Dallas, Texas before attending USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, graduating in 2011. Daphne enjoys crafting visual stories that bring audiences on a journey, and believes deeply in the use of storytelling as a bridge for empathy. She looks for impactful, daring scripts, and loves to work with directors who are just as fearless in their vision.

Her first breakthrough project is the documentary Accepted (2022) directed by Dan Chen, following four high school seniors in rural Louisiana who attend T.M. Landry, an unconventional school made famous for sending its graduates to elite universities. The film premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2021 and was distributed by Greenwich Entertainment theatrically in 2022, and broadcast on PBS.

Her narrative breakthrough project is feature film The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (2023) directed by Bomani Story. Shot in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2022, the film follows Vicaria, a teenage anti-hero on a desperate quest to cure death.
