(They/Them)

Get ready to see Bella Ramsey on our screens for the next 60 to 70 years, because that’s the ambition of the young actor, who points to the longevity of such celebrated practitioners as Sir Patrick Stewart and Dame Judi Dench as sources of inspiration. It’s not beyond reason given how successful Bella’s career has been already. They burst onto the scene in Game of Thrones (2016-2019), and since then they have dazzled in the likes of The Worst Witch (2017-2020), Catherine Called Birdy, Becoming Elizabeth (both 2022) and, most recently, Time and The Last of Us (both 2023).

Bella’s barely stopped working for the past nine years, and already has a BAFTA win and an Emmy nomination to their name. Bella also has aspirations to expand their wheelhouse beyond performing and has been writing their debut feature film, which they also intend to direct.

In their own words...

“I haven’t set specific goals. When I put too much pressure on something, or set it as a goal, it takes away the frivolity of the initial dream. So I try to not force myself to do anything before I’m ready. I’ve been writing this film since I was 14 and that was born out of a place of wanting to and needing to write it, so I did. It wasn’t something I planned on doing. I go off instinct most of the time and just take things as they come. It’s more about wanting to stay in the industry and explore the different aspects of it as and when they feel right.”

“I really love the range of people [on BAFTA Breakthrough]... I also love that it’s not a competition. It feels very community-based rather than being competitive in any way, which is nice. It feels like a really kind and supportive initiative.”

Bella’s voice will next be heard in the Aardman animated film Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget for Netflix, while production on season two of The Last of Us (HBO) begins in early 2024.
