'The Master'; the master is an apt description of this incredible actor who made each part his own

Across two decades and over fifty film roles, Philip Seymour Hoffman established himself as one of the most versatile screen actors of his generation. Whether he was in period dramas (Boogie Nights), comedies (The Big Lebowski), or action films (Mission Impossible III), Hoffman would consistently surprise audiences with his remarkable depth and extraordinary talent.

Throughout his career he worked with a range of directors, including Spike Lee (25th Hour), Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) and Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche, New York). One of his most successful collaborations was with Paul Thomas Anderson, where he starred in five of his films: Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love and The Master.

A five-time BAFTA nominee, Hoffman won in 2006 for his performance as the title character in Bennett Miller's Capote. His other nominations included Charlie Wilson's War, Doubt, The Ides of March and The Master.

In 2010, he made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy Jack Goes Boating. His most recent performances included Plutarch Heavensbee in the The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and his stage performance as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman.

BAFTA Achievements

Philip Seymour Hoffman was nominated for five BAFTAs over the course of his career, winning once in 2006 for his leading role in .

The award was presented by actress Imelda Staunton at the then Orange British Academy Film Awards. Below is a photo of the pair enjoying themselves backstage during the ceremony which was held at the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square.
