Benedict Cumberbatch - Red Carpet Interview, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2015

Red carpet interview with Benedict Cumberbatch

Interviewer: Zoe Ball

...

A.  The script, I fell in love with from the first page.  It's just so tantalising, so uncompromising, it's very funny, engaging, brilliant, witty, then moving, then it became a sort of cause.  By the end of the film, as everybody who has seen it will know, this is how we treated this extraordinary fragile, sensitive, unique human being.  And it has become a real deep passion of mine and all the film makers involved, as well as those who are not being honoured tonight, but who are collectively through us honouring Alan Turing's story to as broad an audience as possible.  We are thrilled tonight.

Q.  I have a question.  So many questions from the people have been tweeting them in.

A.  What do I watch on a Saturday night?  Probably my pillow coming towards my eyes.  I am a bit of a home body at the moment.  No, no, that's a lie, but my friend has just joined The Voice.

Q.  Ah, look.

A.  Oh it is a perfect McQueen suit, but slightly spiced up with a punky badge.  But this is all about saving Soho which, you know, half the people on this red carpet will have experienced the joys of Soho both professionally and at leisure and it is such a unique part of London cultural life.  This is very much going off the topic, but I hope, I hope Hannah forgives me.  But no, I am watching that and supporting him now, and God, that sucks you in, that programme.

Q.  The Voice is good.  Good luck tonight.

A.  Thank you.

Q.  You have been in this race with Eddie, not a race, but it is sort of….

A.  Ah, you know.  I think the race, as far as that goes, is over and done with.  But to be in the same room as him, watching him winning, is still an honour.  I'm thrilled to be counted amongst the numbers that are nominated tonight, I really am.  And I wish David Oyelowo was here with us as well.  He's a dear friend of mine and it was an extraordinary performance, and for whatever reason he is not here.  I don't understand it.  He certainly would have got my vote. So I will be honouring him in my mind.

Q.  Good luck tonight.  Wonderful to see you.

A.  Thank you.

Q.  And I am glad you watch The Voice, Benedict Cumberbatch.
