Glasgow, 8 December 2015: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts in Scotland, BAFTA Scotland has announced today that the British Academy Scotland New Talent Awards are now open for entries.

Students and emerging professionals in the moving image industries in Scotland are invited to submit films, documentaries, animation, original music, entertainment programmes and games works for consideration. Entries should be submitted by Friday 15 January 2016.

The annual Awards ceremony recognises, inspires and celebrates new and emerging practitioners from all over the country and gives up-and-coming screen industry talent an all-important platform to showcase their work to the wider industry. The ceremony in 2016 will be hosted by Muriel Gray and will take place in Glasgow on Thursday 14 April.

Previous winners have gone on to enjoy successful careers as a result of their triumphs, including Ben Sharrock and Irune Gurtubai who scooped the Drama and Writer awards respectively at the 2015 ceremony for their work on their short film, Patata Tortilla. Since then, the duo have shot their debut feature film, Pikadero, which has gone on to receive six international awards including the Critic’s Choice Award at the Zurich Film Festival and an International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award.

Ben Sharrock, a previous British Academy Scotland New Talent Award winner, said: “When we were told we were nominated for a British Academy Scotland New Talent Award for Patata Tortilla, Irune and I were thrilled, and when we heard we had clinched not one but two awards, we were over the moon. BAFTA Scotland is so important in recognising Scotland’s deep pool of talent. Its New Talent Awards are a fantastic platform for new practitioners, like I once was, to gain confidence and get a foot in the industry so I’d encourage all creatives to enter these awards. It’s a wonderful chance to showcase your work.”

Jude MacLaverty, Director of BAFTA Scotland, said: “BAFTA Scotland is dedicated to nurturing the tremendous level of new and emerging talent across the moving image industries. Year upon year, we are overwhelmed by the incredible amount of entries and last year’s awards saw a great mix of winners, including 12-year-old Hannah Ord, who took home our Actress award, showing there’s no age limit on talent.  The quality and diversity of entries continues to impress us and we can’t wait to see what this year’s awards will unveil.”
