On December 15th in Athens Park, at 125th and Broadway, BAFTA Los Angeles co-hosted the 7th Annual West Athens Family Christmas Party, along with a host of organizations including A Better LA, CURE, Kalikoat Kidz, LA County Department of Parks and Recreation and People for Community Improvement.
Over the years, our collaborative work on screenings and events in West Athens has resulted in a genuine shift in community dynamics, cooling tensions and providing safe venues for children to watch and learn about films and have fun.
Our toy drive for the event was met with an unprecedented response from our members - around 2000 toys were donated or procured, valued at around $14,000.
Some 30 Members (and their children) came down to the park to help with registration, face painting, prize giving, and for the first time - soccer training, in partnership with UK Soccer Camps. All our volunteers were enthusiastically supervised and shepherded by KJ Miller and Katy Haber.
This year's event reminded us all of the unique depth of our members' volunteering and charitable spirit, and was a powerful example of the difference BAFTA LA can make in our community. We hope to provide many more opportunities for BAFTA Los Angeles members to give back to our adoptive city in 2013.
