Senior Research Associate/Engineer – Media Processing, BAFTA Research

BAFTA Research is seeking a Senior Research Associate (SRA) to take responsibility for investigating a specific area within the BAFTA Research agenda, building on an in-depth area of expertise, working with other team members and collaboration partners.

Location: London

Contract: Full-time, fixed-term for 12 months

Salary: Circa £40,000 - £45,000 per annum

We are recruiting for individuals able to contribute not only to our research agenda but also to our back end services.  This is an opportunity to participate in the full innovation life cycle, from research to development to adoption by users. 

The Senior Research Associate (SRA) will take responsibility for investigating a specific area within the BAFTA Research agenda, building on an in-depth area of expertise, working with other team members and collaboration partners.  Research areas cover a range of fields in media processing such as video content analysis and metadata extraction, visual quality assessment, and transcoding optimization.  The SRA will create and innovate from new insights, leading to commercial development following initial research.  These will provide advanced features and functionality to future and current BAFTA Research products and services.   Research is generally ‘applied’, ranging from initial feasibility studies through to development of original technology, gaining familiarity with commercial engineering and contributing to active products and services.  The person appointed will collaborate with the BAFTA Research engineering team, to ensure innovations reach market as complete products.    

The Senior Research Associate will have the opportunity of collaborating with world-class researchers through our academic and industry partnerships, and participation in professional conferences and industry standards initiatives.  It is expected the SRA will contribute regularly to project technical reports and the publication of research results in high impact conferences and peer-reviewed journal publications.  The role is offered for an initial fixed term of 12 months with opportunity to extend; the SRA will have the benefit of joining a high growth business, with excellent career prospects.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in computer science, electrical engineering or related discipline
  • Proven software engineering experience, familiarity with agile life cycles
  • Track record in publishing and scientific communications an advantage
  • Proficiency in Matlab, C++, and other scientific computing tools (e.g. OpenCV)
  • Background in media-specific research
  • Experience in industry-academic collaborative research preferred
