An East German actor who remained a critic but loyal supporter of the Communist regime, Esche's talents won him international acclaim. These were employed primarily in his work with the Deutches Theater, touring extensively. His films included Der Geteilte Himmel (1964), Spur Der Steine (1966) and Life With Uwe (1974).
