A stage trained actress, Carter came to prominence on television with guest roles on soaps, dramas such as The Edge of Night (1974-76) and sitcoms including On Our Own (1977-78) and Diff’rent Strokes (1984-85). She was best known for her popular, recurring role as Julia Sugarbaker in Designing Women (1986-93).
