After his breakthrough with El Pisito (1959), adapted from his own novel, Azcona went on to establish himself as one of Spain’s leading screenwriters. He co-wrote the script for Marco Ferreri’s La Grande Bouffe (1973) and found international success with Ay, Carmela (1990), Belle Epoque (1992) and Butterfly’s Tongue (1999).
