Directed by Vanessa Engle (Love You to Death: A Year of Domestic Violence, Inside Harley Street), this documentary traces the group back to its roots in the 1970s, describing how its leader, Aravindan Balakrishnan, believed in an international communist revolution and created a tiny political sect following the teachings of China’s Chairman Mao.
With exclusive access to interviews with two of the women who escaped, including Balakrishnan’s daughter who was born and raised in captivity, this film documents how the members were controlled, threatened and brainwashed so they were too terrified to leave.
Q&A hosted by Stephen Armstrong.
