British Academy Cymru Awards to include Games Honour

30 January 2017

The BAFTA Cymru award for games – previously presented at a stand-alone event – will now be included in the prestigious annual autumn Cymru awards ceremony.

We will now celebrate and honour Welsh talent in games, as well as in film and television, at our annual British Academy Cymru Awards, beginning with the next ceremony on 8 October 2017.

BAFTA Cymru’s award for best Welsh game has been presented since 2012 and is sponsored by Games Dev at Wrexham Glyndŵr University, and from 2013 had been presented at a separate event during the Wales Development Games Show. However, following a year-on-year increase in entries for the award and in consultation with previous winners and nominees, advisors and elected members of the BAFTA Cymru Committee, the award will now be presented within the annual British Academy Cymru Awards ceremony, which attracts up to 1,000 attendees each year.

BAFTA Cymru is eager to continue to recognise outstanding creative achievement in games in any genre. The decision to move the award into the annual British Academy Cymru Awards also enables individuals in games to enter the Breakthrough Award, which previously has only been open to film and television entrants.

Angharad Mair, Chair of BAFTA Cymru, said: “It is an exciting time for the creative media industry in Wales and we look forward to bringing peers working in all areas of creative content together to celebrate and recognise their work at one big, prestigious event. Crossover and collaboration to create multi-platform exploitation of IP has become more prevalent in recent years, which has been evident in the entries for the games award previously, and we hope that this exciting move will encourage more of this type of interaction.”

Entries for the British Academy Cymru Awards are due to open in early March 2017.
BAFTA Cymru is encouraging companies and individuals who are eligible to enter their work.

BAFTA Cymru also offers membership for those working in film, television and games, which is available year-round and offers a range of benefits and voting rights in the British Academy Cymru Awards.  For further information please visit Membership
