Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival is a newly launched 3 day event held at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. The event will include screenings of Japanese animations from mainstream to independent, workshops for children and Barry Purves masterclass.
The only festival which focuses on Japanese animation in Wales.

Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival is a newly launched 3 day event held at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. The event will include screenings of Japanese animations from mainstream to independent, workshops for children and Barry Purves masterclass. The only festival which focuses on Japanese animation in Wales.

PROGRAMME INCLUDES:

Ponyo
Feature Film Screening (Suitable for Children). An animated adventure centered on a 5-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Barry Purves Masterclass
Barry Purves will talk about the making of his Japanese themed animation entitled "Screenplay", his current works, and his newest book "Basics Animation: Stop-Motion". Guest speaker: Barry Purves and Interviewer: Tim Allen - stop motion animator. Followed by Book Signing 

Short Film Screenings
Film presentations with panel discussion, featuring the first episode of Samurai Champloo, together with Fumiko's Confession (Hiroyasu Ishida); She and her Cat (Makoto Shinkai); Loop Pool (Daiki Aizawa); Kni-Train (Miho Yata); Origami Butterfly (Shigeru Okada); The Demon (Shin Hosakawa); The Mechanism of Spring (Atsushi Wada); Tegwon Rhapsody (Kenichiro Mizuno); Traces of Other (Daisuke Nagaoka) and presenting the trailer for Looking for a Star by Eiko Ishii Meredith
Guest speakers:
Midoriko Hayashi - organises independent animation screenings in Japan.
Tetsuji Kurashige - university lecturer and independent film maker.

Feature Film Screening (PG)
This is the Welsh première of the 2009 anime science fiction film, which focuses on a timid eleventh-grade math genius who has been falsely implicated in the hacking of a virtual world and must prevent the real and computer-simulated worlds from colliding. It was produced by the Japanese animation studio Madhouse and directed by Mamoru Hosoda.
