Nominees Announced for Film Not in the English Language

4 January 2008

4 January 2008

The nominations for the Film Not in the English Language Award, to be presented at the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2008, were announced today:

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The Kite Runner

The Lives of Others

Lust, Caution

La Vie en Rose

Chapter voting has been introduced for this Award by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for the first time this year. A Chapter is comprised of Academy voting members with expertise in a specific area of the film industry.

The newly formed Film Not in the English Language Chapter has voted to decide the five nominated films, announced today ahead of the announcement of the nominations in other categories, which will take place later this month. The membership at large will vote to decide the winner, to be announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 10 February 2008.

This early announcement of the nominations allows the members a longer period to view the five films in contention and gives a greater profile to this year’s foreign language films.

Finola Dwyer, Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, said “We are delighted to be able to announce the contenders for this award today, chosen by BAFTA members who watch a large number of foreign language films and who have a great interest in world cinema”.

Nominations for this year’s Orange Rising Star Award will be announced on 8 January and all other nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2008 will be announced on 16 January. The winners will be announced during the Film Awards ceremony on Sunday 10 February at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.
