The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA – rewards and celebrates excellence in the screen industries through its internationally-renowned annual awards ceremonies and year-round programme of events produced for the public, BAFTA members and industry practitioners. BAFTA Research is a technology R&D business unit within BAFTA, a commercial social enterprise, contributing to the BAFTA charitable remit. Our research is focused on innovations in media processing and cloud computing, supporting the digital needs of media archives, producers and service providers. Our first commercial service – Source to ScreenTM (S2S) - is now in beta usage with key clients. Source to Screen provides a simple, end-to-end service for media management and delivery. It can be used to maintain media collections in the cloud, to manage the upload and delivery of content, and to perform a variety of media processing operations such as transcoding and quality assurance.

We are seeking an Application Consultant/Engineer to engage with users of Source to Screen to ensure they get the best from the service. This will involve discussing requirements and agreeing criteria for success, working with S2S configuration and API tools to deliver solutions, and liaising with the S2S development team and user web developers / in-house technical teams. This role will also contribute to systems administration and general support, and prepare marketing and online demonstrations. As a new and growing business, BAFTA Research offers the opportunity to make an impact in this role, and scope for career development in the future. The person appointed will be a member of BAFTA staff, collaborating with colleagues across the organisation to fulfill Academy goals.

Job Responsibilities

  • Engage with users to define requirements
  • Implement and support custom S2S configurations
  • Be familiar with the S2S API; liaise with R&D team, contribute to development roadmap
  • Create prototypes, tools and reference applications using the S2S API
  • Monitor and respond to requests for support
  • Perform systems administration tasks; be familiar with R&D team tools such as source code repository, cloud computing infrastructures
  • Participate in media research projects, maintain a good understanding of industry standards such as video codecs and open source media toolsets
  • Contribute to QA and test strategy

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Excellent written and personal communication skills
  • Relevant degree (advanced preferred) in Computer Science, Engineering or related
  • Familiarity with modern software languages and development process
  • Strong knowledge of Unix/Linux/Ubuntu and network architectures
  • Proficiency in development and scripting languages (e.g. PHP, Java, C++)
  • Additional skills in UI/UX design or Android/IOS/Qt development an advantage
  • Ability to set and meet objectives and work both independently and in a team
  • Genuine interest in advanced media technology
