A versatile screen actor from the late 1940s, Whitmore appeared in such movies as The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Kiss Me Kate (1953), Oklahoma! (1955), Planet of the Apes (1968), Give ‘Em Hell Harry! (1975) - where he was the sole cast member - On Golden Pond (1980) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994).
