Best known for scripting The African Queen (1951), Viertel’s grim experience on location inspired his novel White Hunter, Black Heart, filmed in 1990. Long married to Deborah Kerr, his other screenplays include Saboteur (1942) and Hemingway adaptations The Sun Also Rises (1957) and The Old Man And The Sea (1958).
