A legendary sound mixer, Varney was known for his work on The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) – both BAFTA nominated – and Back To The Future (1984). In addition he won praise for his efforts restoring Orson Welles’ neglected masterpiece Touch of Evil in 1998.
