An actor adept at playing authority figures, Treves appeared in the popular mini-series The Jewel In The Crown (1984). In a career spanning 50 years he worked extensively in television, film, theatre and radio, with features including The Elephant Man (1980), Defence of the Realm (1986) and The Fool (1990).
