Familiar to British television audiences as Alan Dawson in Emergency Ward 10 (1958-59), Tingwell appeared in British films including Murder Most Foul (1964) before returning to his native Australia. There he enjoyed success with police series Homicide (1973-77) and films including Breaker Morant (1980), The Castle (1997) and Jindabyne (2006).
